The demand for AI is driving a surge in data center construction across the country. New data center facilities are high-value sites that require strong physical security from day one. With sensitive equipment, constant vendor activity, and strict access requirements, even a single security lapse can result in downtime, data exposure, compliance violations, and costly business disruptions.
Essential Security Requirements for Data Centers

Generic guard coverage misses most of what a data center actually requires. The job includes:
- Access control for employees, contractors, and vendors
- 24/7 physical presence to deter unauthorized entry
- Immediate response to equipment alarms and facility issues
- Temperature checks on critical equipment during patrol rounds
- Emergency coordination during power failures or other incidents
None of this works without consistent staffing. A data center that loses coverage for even one shift has an unsecured server room, and that’s the exact failure the client below was dealing with when they came to NSG.
The Client
NSG was approached by a facilities management company responsible for more than two million square feet of mission-critical data and cloud centers. These facilities housed Department of Defense information, HIPAA-protected health records, and personal credit card data. The high security standard was not optional.
The Problem
Before NSG took over, the account had three main security issues:
- High guard turnover. Coverage was inconsistent, and critical areas went unsecured between staffing changes.
- Missed shifts and incomplete tours. Server room temperature checks were skipped, doors were left unsecured, and contractors moved through classified areas unsupervised.
- Contract risk. These gaps put the client out of compliance with the security standards their own contract required.
What NSG Did
We started with a requirement meeting to align on expectations and timelines, then built custom security protocols and post orders specific to the facility. Guards received specialized training before their first shift.
The client got a dedicated operations manager and a 24/7 operations team, not a rotating point of contact. From there:
- Strategic guard scheduling was rebuilt to reduce turnover and keep coverage consistent.
- 24/7 operations manager coverage went into place along with and flex officer coverage, so a call-off no longer meant a missed shift.
- A security patrol monitoring system was installed to track security tours and incident reports, with a detailed report delivered to both NSG management and the client each day.
Weekly oversight visits and a monthly feedback system were also put in place to keep improving service instead of letting it plateau after the first month.
The Result
Guard turnover dropped 85%, and the missed shifts and incomplete tours that had been the original problem stopped happening. The patrol monitoring system gave the client documented proof of every tour and every incident, which rebuilt the trust the account had lost. The client kept their contract, and the facility has run without a security lapse since.
Why This Works for Any Data Center
The systems that fixed this account are the same ones NSG runs on every data center contract: site-trained backup guards so a call-off never leaves a shift uncovered, tour verification so patrols are provable instead of assumed, and weekly management visits so problems get caught early, before they become compliance findings. NSG is Cincinnati-based and has provided security services in the region since 1988 with local and involved management.
If your data center or mission-critical facility needs security that can document compliance and hold up under an audit, contact NSG to talk through your requirements.
